Convenient location close to town and lake with helpful staff. Comfy bed, hot shower, and complimentary toiletries provided. Limited check-in time, but staff communicated well. Cabin was cozy with beautiful views. Short walk to restaurants and shopping. Staff was receptive and assisted with car ice removal. a comfortable stay for middle-aged guests.

Room was clean, staff polite, the hostel was very convenient for shops, cafes etc
The noise from the club next door kept me awake until the early hours

Small room but clean with a decent bathroom. Good price. Close to everything.
I would not recommend this hostel as the noise was unbelievable! I have stayed in many hostels before and live in the centre of a noisy town but I have never been kept awake so late with the noise of the pub opposite! There was a live band until 3 am and despite wax earplugs jammed in my ear it sounded like they were in the next room! If you stay here, make sure you are in a room at the back of the building especially on the weekend. To top this off we were greeted by a cold shower at 9 am as hot water had run out!!

The location of this hotel was great, as it was situated near a lively night club that stayed open until the early hours of the morning. the room was quite comfortable and the bathroom was relatively clean. the breakfast provided was decent and the leisure facilities were useful. the view from the room could have been better.
Some of the staff members were not friendly or helpful, which made for an unpleasant check-in experience.

I was competing at a cycling event and backpackers was very close to everywhere I needed to go. The room and bathroom were clean and comfortable and the kitchen was functional and very adequate. I think patrons should be advised however that it is an extremely noisy location.
The noise level at night was unacceptable and made sleep impossible. It is totally unsuitable as a place to stay for anyone who does not want to party. The backpackers is located in a street full of bars and nightclubs and the extremely loud music doesn't stop until 3am and thereafter you are continually disturbed by returning partygoers.

Nice clean room with ensuite and well maintained. Nice friendly staff and a very good experience in all. Had a room facing the main road. Good value for money :)
Very noisy on Saturday night due to the pub below. If you are planning on an early morning journey the next day, then this possibly isnt the best place to catch some shut eye early on Saturday night due to the party which goes on till wee hours next morning. Other than that, it was a very pleasant stay and would stay here again.

I had a great stay at this hotel in the city center. The location couldn't be better, with everything within walking distance. The staff were friendly and helpful, going above and beyond to assist me. The room with its private bathroom was clean and comfortable, and the breakfast provided was a nice bonus.
Some occasional noise from the surrounding area.

The manager was very friendly and helpful, the bathroom was great but the bedroom very basic.
Carrying our luggage up to the top floor is a little arduous and as there is no parking we had to park at the police station to secure our car and contents.

Rooms were modern and clean. The location is excellent, staff friendly. For a budget backpackers it rates among the best I've stayed in
There is only one thing not to like about this place, unless you love to party! Until 2am on Friday evening sleep on the lower floors is almost impossible due to the bass of the music from the bar beneath!

We loved the location of this hotel! It was right in the heart of all the action, surrounded by many loud parties that went until late at night. Despite being above a very noisy open-air night club, we were able to sleep soundly each night. The staff was very helpful and took great care of us during our stay, making sure we had everything we needed. We also appreciated the many amenities provided in our room, such as heating, tea and coffee facilities, and garden furniture.
We had a minor issue upon arrival, but the staff quickly resolved it for us and we were able to enjoy the rest of our stay. We highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a comfortable and convenient place to stay in this area.

The room and ensuite were very clean and functional. The shared kitchen facilities were modern, clean and spacious.
We were only given two pillows which placed together would have equalled half of a normal pillow. Asked down stairs for extra but told no more availiable. Music from bars on both sides of the street made it near impossible to sleep until about 3am dispite double glazing.

It was easy to find. Well positioned in town and central to everything. Provided a discount card for breakfast at a local cafe and it was beautiful food at a great price.
Because it was so central to everything (the pubs and bars) it was very loud at night while we were trying to sleep.

Excellent location and good value for a private room. The room had a beautiful view, and the staff were accommodating and friendly. The hostel also had a bar and a spacious kitchen with plenty of utensils. Although there were a few minor drawbacks, such as the noise from the bar and the lack of parking, I would still recommend a stay at Based By The Lake. it was a pleasant experience.

Location, ensuite room facility rm 310.
Kitchen facilities... absence of any serious cooking implements..may have all been nicked? Some equipment like toasters were useless. Great as long as you eat out! Answer below reflects these issues. Otherwise yes!

The location was nice and central and walking distance to everything. Rooms were clean and tidy and staff helpful.
While the location was great, we were unaware that it was above a night club and beside two others. The noise levels were out of this world and very difficult to get any sleep! Based on this I would not recommend Base Taupo to others. Apart from the noise (which i understand is not completely within your control) the stay was pleasant.
